Descrição
The Pycnogonida collection of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (IORAS) contains 2134 lots of sea spider wet collection from different areas of the World Ocean. The entire IORAS Pycnogonida collection is digitized – taxon name according to World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), collection date, coordinates, depth and other data for every specimen is stored in database and available as dataset at GBIF. 74% of specimens are determined to the species level.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Cobertura Geográfica
The collection encompasses samples collected since 1947 through 144 research cruises at 996 stations (localities) in different areas of the World Ocean. It is notably robust in specimens from the polar regions, including both the Arctic and Antarctic, and the North-West Pacific regions. Most of the specimens were obtained from the Soviet and Russian cruises onboard RV (research vessel) Vityaz, Akademik M. Keldysh, and Dmitry Mendeleev, focusing on the Barents, Kara, Bering Seas, and the Sea of Okhotsk. Additionally, numerous samples were obtained from RV Polarstern research cruises in the Bransfield Strait, Drake Passage, Laptev Sea, and Weddell Sea.

Cobertura Taxonômica
The collection was mainly identified and curated by Elena Petrovna Turpaeva (1923 - 2017), Soviet and Russian zoologist and specialist on sea spider taxonomy and also on marine fouling. Elena Petrovna worked in the IORAS since 1950 and described 60 new Pycnogonida species and 10 new subspecies. 110 type specimens for 51 species and 11 subspecies are kept in the collection. The collection includes 274 Pycnogonida species, representing 45 genera and 13 families of Pycnogonida.

Métodos de Amostragem
The collection specimens were mainly obtained during the research cruises using Sigsbee trawls (761 specimens), bottom trawls (176 specimens), Agassiz trawls (155 specimens), Okean grabs 0.25 (98 specimens), and dredges (97 specimens). In total, 1,472 pycnogonid specimens were obtained by different trawl types.
Área de Estudo | The material was collected mainly to investigate fauna of Russian seas and deep-sea fauna of the World Ocean. |

Descrição dos passos do método:
- A beam trawl consists of a cone-shaped body ending in a bag or codend, which retains the catch. In these trawls the horizontal opening of the net is provided by a beam, made of wood or metal, which is up to 12 m long. The vertical opening is provided by two hoop-like trawl shoes mostly made from steel. Agassiz trawl is a modified beam trawl. Qualitative sampling device used to sample large numbers of the megabenthos and benthopelagic fauna. Named after the American naturalist Alexander Agassiz. Also called the Blake trawl or Sigsbee trawl (the name of the ship used by Alexander Agassiz and the captain of that ship respectively). Otter trawl is one cone-shape trawl towed on the seabed by one boat with its horizontal spread maintained by a pair of otter boards. Otter boards (commonly called trawl doors) were first connected to the wingends of a trawl, and then moved forward with bridles and/or sweeps connecting the wingends to the otter boards. Dredges are gears which are dragged along the bottom to catch benthic fauna. They consist of a mouth frame to which a holding bag constructed of metal rings or meshes is attached. Grabs samplers are devices that are designed to take soil samples from the bottom of water bodies. The Okean grab was developed in the USSR in two modifications - "Okean 0.1" and "Okean 0.25", differing in the size of the buckets.
